ABSTRACT

The author has studied 33 cases of Korean embryos of Carnegie stage 11 ~23 and 18 cases of fetuses to demonstrate the development of the hip joint. The external feature of the lower extremity was observed by stereoscope and digital camera, and the internal structures were studied by light microscopic observation. The results obtained were as follows: In stage 13 lowerlimb buds were appeared. In stage 17 mesenchymal condensation for femur and hip bone, and one -layered interzone were observed. In stage 18 cartilage models for ilium and ischium were visible. In stage 22 three -layered interzone between the head of femur and hip bone was formed. In stage 23 acetabular labrum and distinct three -layered interzone was visible. In the 9th weeks mesenchymal ligamentum capitis femoris and transverse acetabular ligament are appeared, and acetabular labrum was reacted tracely to trichrome stain. In the 10th week the joint space was formed between the femoral head and hip bone, and shallow depression in acetabulum is found. In the 12th week the articular capsule was directed lateral to acetabular labrum, and numerous blood vessels were found in acetabular fossa and ligamentum capitis femoris, and cartilage canal were developed in femoral neck. In the 14th week cartilage canal was found in middle of femoral head, and synovial fold were developed, and ligamentum capitis femoris was shown strongly positive reaction. In the 16th week cartilage canals were more found, and numerous blood vessels were observed in fovea capitis. In the 18nd week the neck of femur was narrow, and femoral head was lied deeply in acetabulum with acetabular labrum. Consequently the lower extremity of Korean embryos and fetuses was first appeared in stage 13, and hip joint development was started at stage 17. The articular cavity was first formed at the 9th week of development, the acetabulum labrum was developed at stage 23. The mesenchymal ligamentum capitis femoris was appeared at the 9th week. At the same time the transverse acetabular ligament fully encircled the femoral head. The articular capsule has lined the articular cavity at the 12th week, and synovium was formed at the 14th week of development. At the 18th week the hip joint has attained its final shape.

ABSTRACT

Adriamycin has been widely used as an anticancer drug in the treatment of thyroid tumor, metastatic breast cancer, sarcoma and lymphoma. The antineoplastic effects of adriamycin result from its inhibitory action on the nucleic acid synthesis and the formation of reactive oxygen radicals by redoxcycling during its metabolic process. Adriamycin affects the normal cells of the patients and causes the undesirable side effects and the toxic effects. Thus, in this study we investigated the effect of dimethyl thiourea (DMTU), a hydroxyl radical scavenger, on the ultrastructural changes of the hepatocyte after the administration of adriamycin in the growing and adult rats. 36 Healthy male Sprague -Dawley adult rats (about 350 g) and 36 male rats at growing peroid (about 120 g) was used as experimental animals. Adriamycin (25 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally and DMTU (500 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally 30 minutes after the administration of adriamycin. The rats were sacrificed at 24 hours and 72 hours after the administration of adriamycin. A part of the liver from left anterior lobe was obtained and sliced into about 1 mm 3 . The specimens were prepared by the routine methods for electron microscopy. All preparations were stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate and observed with Hitach -600 electron microscope. The results were as follows. 1. In the hepatocytes of the adult rat dilated, segmented and ribosome detached cisternae of rough endoplasmic reticulum, increased and dilated cisternae of smooth endoplasmic reticulum, damaged mitochondria and autophagic vacuoles were seen after the administration of adriamycin. The ultrastructural changes were progressive with the lapse of time. 2. In the hepatocyte of the growing rat dilated and ribosome detached cisternae of rough endoplasmic reticulum, changes of mitochondria, many lysosomes and the autophagic vacuoles were observed after the administration of adriamycin. 3. DMTU alone did not affect the ultrastructures of the hepatocytes in both growing and adult rats. 4. In the hepatocytes of growing and adult rats, dilated and ribosome detached cisternae of rough endoplasmic reticulum, dilated and increased cisternae of smooth endoplasmic reticulum, changes of mitochondria and autophagic vacuoles were seen after the combined administration of adriamycin and DMTU, but the degree of ultrastructural changes was

ABSTRACT

The present study was designed to detect the distribution of the type I collagens in the three regions, papillary layer, reticular layer and subcutaneous layer of skin in the rats after administration of adriamycin. Intraperitoneally, 1 injections of 5 mg/kg of adriamycin for every 3 days were given and sacrificed 12 hours, 24 hours, 3 days and 1 week later respectively. For the immunoreactions of type I collagen, the specimens were incubated with rabbit anti rat type I collagen polyclonal antibody as primary antibody and biotinylated Goat anti rabbit IgG antibody as secondary antibody. And ABC peroxidase procedure was used. The reactions of type I collagen in the dermis of adriamycin treated rat skin were decreased from 12 hours to 3 day and from 7 day the immunoreactions are constant as like that of normal rats. Adriamycin seems to be suppressing normal components of type I collagen in rat skin.

ABSTRACT

In the fractures and dislocations of the carpus, prompt and accurate diagnosis is the prime prerequisite for restoring function to this most complicated joint in the body. And then, early precise reduction and continuous maintenance of the reduced position until ligamentous and bone healing is complete provide the best chance of achieving a satisfactory restoration of function. We analysed forty five cases of fractures and dislocations of the carpus which were treated for 5 years from Jan. 1984 to Dec. 1988 at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, College of Medicine, Hallym University. The following results were obtained; l. Of the total 45 injuries, scaphoid fractures were seen in 32(71.1%), other carpal bone fractures except scaphoid in 13 patients(28.9%), and carpal bone dislocation and fracture- dislocations in 11 patients(24.4%). 2. Carpal scaphoid fracture 1) 19 of the 32 patients(59.4%) had an associated ipsilateral upper extremity injury. 2) This fracture was common in the young male. 3) A union rate(95.6%) was achieved using a usual conservative treatment for undisplaced racture(14), operative treatment for displaced(18). 4) The mean time to radiological union for all fractures was 11.1 weeks. Old fracture by SotoHall classification took the longest time to union(18.2 weeks), subacute fracture 13 weeks, and acute fracture 9 weeks. 5) 10 cases were treated for nonunion, 5 of 10 nonunions were classified as type (50%). 2 cases showed ultimately nonunion in spite of various sorts of treatment, which belonged to waist fracture. 3. Other carpal bone fractures except scaphoid were seen in 13(15 bones) of 45 injuries, and pisiform(4) and triquetrum(4) fractures were common. 4. Carpal dislocation and fracture-dislocations were seen in 11 of the 45 injuries and dorsal transscaphoid perilunate dislocations(4) were common. These were treated by C.R. and cast immobilization or O.R. and K-wire fixation relatively good results were obtained.
